He then married Anna Wilkens on 11 Jan 1863 in Heist and they had 7 children; Wilhelm, Catharina, Margaretha, Anna, Henry, Gasa and unknown. Spelling of last name in this website is from picture postcard which advertises a family hotel in Heist, Germany. Spelling in death record is Brugman. Spelling on tombstone is Brugmann. Spelling of wife's name on opposite side of same tombstone is Bruggmann. The passenger record indicates surname spelling Brugmann. Daughter Margeretha's baptism & vaccination certificates indicate name is spelled Brugmann. Grandson Ernst's baptism cert indicates spelling of mother's name as Brurgemann or Brugemann (script difficult to read). Newspaper articles: NOTICE : Johann Brigmann (sic - Brugmann) Is Claimed by Death; Johann Brigmann was claimed by death Friday evening at the age of 75 years, two months and seven days. Although a native of Germany he has lived in this county for a great many years and has raised a large family. The funeral will take place from the Presbyterian church Monday afternoon at two o'clock. FUNERAL: At the Presbyterian church to-day at 2 p. m. the funeral of Johann Brigmann (sic - Brugmann) took place, the Rev. Renner of Germantown officiating. It was solemn and imposing, and the floral tributes were beautiful although the advanced season has caused a scarcity of flowers. Mr. Brigmann came directly from Germany in 1894. For fifty years he was a farmer, and a good and successful one. Past seventy-five years of age he had seen the world in all its phases. He was a seaman in his younger days and had visited nearly every country with a seaport. Mr. Brigmann was an honest man, which according to a great poet, is "the noblest work" of God. He was respected as only such men should be. He left a widow and eight children. Two of his sons are in Germany, Peter and Johann. Two live in this county, Joseph (sic - Jochim) of Leesville, and Henry of Arbuckle. His four daughters are Mrs. H. C. Webber (sic - Weber) of Chico, Mrs. W. M. Anderson of Colorado, Mrs. Geo. Meyers of Grimes and Mrs. Michael Dander of Yuba City. They laid him to rest in the Colusa cemetery, and many who had known him in life came to pay the last respects to their dead relative or friend. Editorial notes: Leesville and Arbuckle are in Colusa county, Chico is in Butte county, Yuba City is in Sutter county, all CA. First names of daughters of Johann Brugmann listed above: Mrs. H. C.
