He was confined to bed in his final illness only eight days, suffering from an attack of influenza complicated by infirmities of age. John H. Read More	OLD RESIDENT PASSES AWAY JOHN DIRKS SUCCUMBS TO BRIEF ILLNESS AFTER LONG AND UPRIGHT LIFE John Dirks, a resident of Plymouth County for thirty-nine years, died at his home Tuesday, at the age of 85 years. He was confined to bed in his final illness only eight days, suffering from an attack of influenza complicated by infirmities of age. John H. Dirks was born in Germany December 29, 1840, where he grew up and was married to Reaka Hartmann in 1862. Their union was blessed with nine children, three of whom died in infancy. He leaves to mourn his death his wife and six children, who are Harm Dirks, of Fresco, Calif.; Dick Dirks, of Pipestone, Minn.; Mrs. Brunke Brunken and Mrs. Emil Lauchstadt, of Le Mars; Mrs. John Meier, of Ireton, and Mrs. Carl Kummels, residing in Germany. He also leaves one brother. Mr. and Mrs. Dirks came from Germany to Le Mars in August, 1885, and settled on a farm west of Le Mars, and made their home in Plymouth County since with the exception of a few years when they farmed near Lennox, S.D. On their return from South Dakota they built a house on the farm of their son-in-law, Brunke Brunken in Elgin Township, where they lived until last fall, spending the winters the past few years with their daughters, either Mrs. Brunken or Mrs. Emil Lauchstadt, returning to their own residence in the spring. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at Christ church, Mammon, Rev. J.D. Meyer officiating.
