At the time of the 1895 Iowa census, he was living there with his brother Joseph. The federal censuses of 1900 and 1910 also show him living there. Nearby farms were occupied by other relatives. At the time of the 1895 Iowa census, he was living there with his brother Joseph. The federal censuses of 1900 and 1910 also show him living there. Nearby farms were occupied by other relatives. The story surrounding John J. Reineke's death has been passed down as follows. He died on 8 July 1913 while cultivating corn in the field on a farm a few miles south of Carroll. It was apparently an extremely hot month. He was working with a cultivator harnessed to a team of horses. John's youngest brother, Matt, was working on another farm a short distance away, and could see John working. Matt eventually noticed that John's cultivator did not seem to be moving through the field. When Matt came over to investigate, he found that John was dead. He was still in the harness, hooked up to the horse-drawn cultivator. He had died of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. In a sad coincidence, another tragedy hit the family exactly ten days later. On 18 July 1913, John's brother Anton also died of heat stroke while working on a neighboring farm. [See Anton Reineke] John J. Reineke never married and had no children. He is buried in the Carroll Cemetery, in the same plot with his parents and brother Anton.
