He received holy sacrament of baptism in the Lutheran Church in IL. and confirmed there later. In the year of 1856, when Mr. Dirks was only eight years of age, his parents moved to Nebraka. They experienced all the hardships of early pioneer life in this community. Mr. Dirks made the trip from Nebraska City, NE. to Brownville, NE. to Denver, Coloardo, six times with a team of oxen, hauling freight between these two places. The drivers usually walked the entire distance both ways. John and Kathry were blessed with five children,one of which, George, died in infancy, and another son, John, aged 38 years in 1911.
