Description	:	Johann "John" was born in Neu-Glueckstal, Glueckstal, Odessa, S. Russia to Jacob and Maria "Rosina" (Kraenzler) Hertel. He came to the USA with his family, arriving in the port of New York 25 April 1885 aboard the S.S. Eider. They came straight out to the Dakota Territory, staying about a year in the Menno/Freeman area to regroup and figure out where they were going from there. He came to the USA with his family, arriving in the port of New York 25 April 1885 aboard the S.S. Eider. They came straight out to the Dakota Territory, staying about a year in the Menno/Freeman area to regroup and figure out where they were going from there. They homesteaded in McPherson County, S.D. in April 1886, about one mile south of Eureka described in the sale contract as S.W. 1/4 of Sec 11, Twp. 126N R73W. John's father died in 1886 and his mother died in 1887. In 1888, his youngest sister died. Sometime between 1888 and 1892, the two youngest children were put into foster homes. John was confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. Later, he headed north to work for various farmers around Long Lake and in McIntosh Co., N.D. Most likely he met Eva Schock in Eureka. John and Eva were married July 1, 1894, and lived on various farms around Java, S.D., and the Ashley, N.D. area. To this devout Christian couple were born nine children. In 1917, they moved to Corson Co., 11 miles northeast of McLaughlin, farming there until 1934, when they retired to live in McLaughlin. John lost his beloved wife, Eva, 2 May 1956. John won a land lottery on Standing Rock Reservation in Corson County, South Dakota. When they first moved there, the Lutheran congregation met in John and Eva's home until the congregation could afford to build the Hope Lutheran Church building. Later, they were also charter members of the Congregational Church in McLaughlin. John spoke seven languages that we're aware of, at least five of them fluently: German, Russian, English, Swedish and Lakota. Because he was so fluent in Lakota, he was often called upon to interpret for the local Indians, and friendships were established with them. When they ran out of food and were especially hungry, a group of them would camp out on the back part of his farm. As soon as John saw them there, he would butcher a cow or two, grab up some blankets and whatever supplies he thought they might need, and took them out to them. They were always grateful for these provisions, and as soon as they had eaten enough to be satisfied, they would move on. John was a man who lived his beliefs in the Christian faith. He died at the McLaughlin Community Hospital from heart disease. Surviving him are five sons: Frederick M., Christian and August, all of McLaughlin, Emil, Dupree, and Henry, Pierre; three daughters: Eva (Christ) Hoff, Valley City, Rose (John) Gross, Dupree, and Lydia (Henry) Speidel, McLaughlin; two sisters: Fredericka (Friedrich) Knodel, Kief, N.D. and Rosina Baier, San Leander, Cal.; 75 grandchildren and 61 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife, Eva; one daughter, Amelia, in infancy; three brothers, Friedrich, Christian and another Christian in infancy; and three sisters: Katharine, Christine in 1888 and Rosina in infancy. His oldest brother, Jacob, died about 1891 in Portland, Oregon. His youngest brother, Karl, died in 1963, in Valley City, North Dakota. His funeral will be at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLaughlin, Rev. R.R. Hanselmann officiating. Burial will be in the United Brethren Congregational Cemetery.
