Description	:	Johanna "Honey" Wynia, of Platte, SD passed away Monday, February 20, 2012 at the Platte Care Center. Johanna "Honey" (DeJong) Wynia was born on September 15, 1910 in Old Platte, SD, the 8th of 14 children to Holst and Johanna (Vanderboom) DeJong. She attended grade school in Old Platte, graduating from the 8th grade. Read More	Johanna "Honey" Wynia, of Platte, SD passed away Monday, February 20, 2012 at the Platte Care Center. Johanna "Honey" (DeJong) Wynia was born on September 15, 1910 in Old Platte, SD, the 8th of 14 children to Holst and Johanna (Vanderboom) DeJong. She attended grade school in Old Platte, graduating from the 8th grade. She helped her older sister Kate, caring for and helping out with her children and worked on the farm alongside her father and brothers. Coming from a family of fourteen children, there was always work to be done. She helped in the family garden, picked corn by hand with her brothers, racing to see who would get to the end of the field first with a full wagon, milked cows, picked cobs and helped with canning the many vegetables and fruits. A certain young cowboy caught her eye at church and he courted her for seven years before asking her to marry him. Honey married Clarence "Boss" Wynia on April 14,1932. He moved his bride across the river because of abundant pasture and they rented a place by the Hoeksma's and Sutton's near Bonesteel, SD. They often told of their meager beginnings, a small house with no insulation with an outhouse, that had no door, which sat on the edge of the Whetstone Creek between the house and the barn, fastened to a tree so it wouldn't fall into the creek. They had no money for gas so they put their 1927 Chevy up on blocks under a tree. If they went anywhere it was on horseback. The Sutton's took their eggs and cream to Bonesteel and picked up their mail and groceries. They always said that they might not have made it if not for the generosity of good neighbors. In 1935 they moved back to a farm southwest of Platte and then to Hamilton Township where they moved into Boss' parent's home. They lived there until they had an opportunity to rent the Beltman Bros. Ranch, which they purchased in 1946. They worked hard and were able to add on tracts of land which became the Wynia Ranch. They remained there for their entire life. Honey worked alongside her husband as a partner in their endeavor, whether it was feeding threshing crews or helping out in the field. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Clarence "Boss" Wynia, Oct. 4, 1999; two sons: Darrell, Aug.18,1952 and Jim, March 16,1973; an infant daughter, Luella; a grandson, Craig, March 16,1973; her parents; six brothers: Ralph DeJong, Govert DeJong, Sipke DeJong, Holst DeJong, Jr., Cornelius "Case" DeJong and Louis in infancy; five sisters: Katherine Oostercamp, Marie Louise DeJong, Henrietta Westerling, Hendrika (Rekie) Beck and Cornelia "Kaye" Iedema.
