Ricklefs * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Contributor: Cheryl Locher Moonen SOURCE: The Monticello Express, Monticello, Iowa, Thursday, May 18th, 1899 Mr. Johanna Rickels died of joy last Sunday morning at the sight of her son, Henry Ohe, who returned from the army the evening before. Mrs. Rickels had been in very poor health for several years, but she had prayed that her life might be spared until the return of her two sons, who were members of the Third Nebraska Regiment. Henry Ohe one of the sons arrived here Saturday evening and John Ohe, the other son, was expected the next day. The meeting was a joyful one, but the excitement was too great for the good mother to survive the shock and she died Sunday morning before the arrival of her son John. Mrs. Rickels was a native of Oldenburg, Germany. Her first husband's name was Ohe. After his death, and about 18 years ago, she came here with her family of children. Eight years ago Mrs. Ohe was married to Gerd J. Rickels who died about a year ago. Since that she has made her home with her children. She is survived by the following children: Ben and August of Monticello, John and Henry recently mustered out of the army, and Mrs. Frank Hofacre. The funeral was conducted at Wayne Church, last Tuesday by Rev. C. Mardorf. Mrs. Rickels was about 55 years of age.
