Johannes 0lson Haugen was born in Vang, Valdris, Norway, January 22, 1851 and landed in America at the age of seventeen. After a couple of years spent around Decorah, he came to Winnebago county where he since then has had his temporal and spiritual home, in the neighborhood of Winnebago church for this last fifty-six years. In June 26, 1880 Mr. Haugen was united in marriage to Johanne Marie Kvam. This union was blessed with thirteen children of whom two, Ole and Alvin died in their youth. The other children are Anna, Mrs. Holland Leland; Bertha, Mrs. S. J. Thompson, Forest City; Clara, Mrs. K.B. Knutson, Mt. Valley township; Emma, Mrs. Edwin Holton, Alden, Minn.; Ruth, Mrs. Milo Fjone, Mt. Valley township; Bernt Haugn, Leland; Joseph Haugen, Rake, Peder Haugen, Leland; Alfred Haugen, Mt. Valley township; Nels Haugen, Mt Valley township. Except the youngest have families of their own with well established farms and beautiful homes, most of them being in the near neighborhood. The funeral took place Saturday, Dec. 4th, from the home and church. Mr. Haugen was carried to his resting place at Winnebago cemetery by his six sons-in-law as pallbearers, followed by a large gathering. The Rev. Ganskou officiating. Together with children and their families the deceased is survived by his wife, and thirty-five grandchildren. Mr. Haugen had not been in robust health for some time, though it was only a few weeks he was confined to his bed at home one mile south of Winnebago church. He was given every care that loving hands could administer, slumbering into his Iast sleep Tuesday, November 30th, at the age of a little less than seventy five years. He was a devout christian gentleman, a good husband, a kind father and a faithful church member. Among the floral offerings at the funeral, the Winnebago church choir placed one, in form of ten dollars to the mission in his memory. Mr. Haugen and his wife were always warm friends of the mission work. Peace be over the grave, blessed be his memory.
