Description	:	William Koch and son Johannes came to Barnes County from Germany in 1884 and filed on Section 28 in Ashtabula Township. William was a landscaper in Germany and continued that work here as well as raising fruits and vegetables for sale, which he peddled with a horse and two wheeled cart. Mr. Koch married a widow with two children from Kentucky. They had one son of their own, John H. Koch. John later became a minister in Washington and Oregon. To this union were born eight children: Karl, Edward, Arthur, Dora, Helen, Clara, Katherine and John, Jr. Johannes (or John) drowned in 1941 and Augusta died in 1940, as did Karl. Edward married Margaret Algeo. Arthur married Mattie Emery and then Frances Emery. Dora married Walter Emery, Jr. in 1922. Helen married Eugene Weller and Clara married Frank McNalley. At thirteen years of age he came to the United States coming directly to North Dakota. From here he moved to the state of Washington, where he was employed for a period of seven years on the railroad. In 1892 he was united in marriage to Augusta Banditt, and returned to North Dakota where he homesteaded in Barnes County, in Sibley Trail Township. To this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters. The family home has been maintained in Barnes County form the first, where Mr. Koch and his family have engaged in general farming and stock raising. One son, Carl, a World War veteran, preceded his father in death in March, 1940. He is survived besides his widow, by the following members of his family: Arthur w. Koch of Luverne; John H. Koch of Dazey; Edward Koch of Troy, Mont.; Dora, Mrs. Walter Emery, of Bluffton, Minn.; Helen, Mrs. Eugene Weller, of Dazey; Clara, Mrs. Frank McNally of Fargo; Katherine, Mrs. Richard Kunze, of Luverne; one step-son, Ernest Lucknow, of Puyallup, Wash.; and twenty-seven grandchildren. Being a man of very friendly disposition, he gathered to himself a host of friends both in his home community and the surrounding towns of Pillsbury, Luverne, Dazey and Valley City. A man of great energy and strength he worked hard and succeeded well in his chosen work of farming, holding a place of esteem in the county as a substantial farmer and good citizen.
