Description	:	Johannes Helgeson Tysdal was born on December 31st, 1814 on the Ovre Tysdal farm near Aardal, Hjelmeland Kommune, Rogaland, Norway. His parents were Helge Hansson Riskedal Bakkane Tysdal born 1784, and Anna Omundsdatter Osen Tysdal born about 1791. He married Sofie Jakobsdatter Ytre Ramsfjell on June 12th,1836 when they were both 18. They had 6 children together in Norway, and in 1857 the family immigrated to Perry, Dane county, Wisconsin. Read More	Johannes Helgeson Tysdal was born on December 31st, 1814 on the Ovre Tysdal farm near Aardal, Hjelmeland Kommune, Rogaland, Norway. His parents were Helge Hansson Riskedal Bakkane Tysdal born 1784, and Anna Omundsdatter Osen Tysdal born about 1791. He married Sofie Jakobsdatter Ytre Ramsfjell on June 12th,1836 when they were both 18. They had 6 children together in Norway, and in 1857 the family immigrated to Perry, Dane county, Wisconsin. In October of 1861 he enlisted in Company E of the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, otherwise known as the Scandinavian Regiment. The men of company E called themselves “Odins Rifles.” During 1862 the 15th Wisconsin participated in campaigns in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Kentucky. On October 8th 1862 it fought in its first major battle called the Battle of Chaplin Hills in Boyle County Kentucky. By then Private Tysdal was assigned as a nurse in the 15th regimental Hospital. He would maintain that duty for the rest of his enlistment. The 15th fought in the Battle of Chickamauga, GA on the 19th and 20th of September 1863 which was the second bloodiest battle of the Civil War. 63% of the soldiers in the 15th were killed, wounded or taken captive. The survivors retreated back to Chattanooga Tennessee where they were put under siege by the confederate forces laying chase right after the battle. Finally the siege was broken by November 25th 1863 by a courageous Union charge up Mission Ridge. The 15th marched over eastern Tennessee until participating in the opening months of General William T. Shermans’ campaign to capture and Burn Atlanta. The Regiment fought in the Battle of New Hope Church, Georgia on May 11th 1864 where they suffered 50% casualties including 29 captured who were sent to the notorious Andersonville GA confederate prison camp. Most of these men died of malnutrition. By November 1864, Pvt. Tysdal was assigned to the Army Hospital at Strawberry Plains Tennessee. He was honorably discharged from the Army in January of 1865. On his return to Dane County Wisconsin he found his wife Sofie was sick and she died 3 months later in April of 1865. By 1866, he remarried Martha Halvorsdatter of Janesville Wisc, who was the widow of Roelof Johnson, another Civil war veteran killed in battle. Johannes and Martha moved to Polk county Iowa and had 6 children together. By 1880 the family moved to Walworth County South Dakota. On April 5th 1905 Johannes Tysdal died in Blue Blanket, SD at the age of 93. He was survived by his wife Martha Tysdal; his daughters Anna Erickson, Minnie Low, Sophia Lane, his sons Henry Tisdale, Oliver Tisdale, Hans Jacob Tisdall, and a stepson Oliver Johnson.
