Description	:	It is believed the young twenty year old Johannes MORETZ arrived in America at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the year 1750. According to Frank Moretz (49473231) the ship named "Osgood" sailed from Rotterdam, Netherlands to Philadelphia with Capt. William Wilkie. It is hard to imagine what a voyage in a tiny sailing ship crossing the Atlantic seas was to endure. The average sailing voyage from Europe to America in the 17th and 18th century was 57 days. According to Frank Moretz (49473231) the ship named "Osgood" sailed from Rotterdam, Netherlands to Philadelphia with Capt. William Wilkie. It is hard to imagine what a voyage in a tiny sailing ship crossing the Atlantic seas was to endure. The average sailing voyage from Europe to America in the 17th and 18th century was 57 days. Most likely he wanted to quickly join Richland Lutheran friends in Liberty, North Carolina. Johannes must have arranged for immediate passage down the Shenandoah Valley on the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia to Roanoke Virginia. Then across the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachian Mountains into colonial Orange (now Randolph)County, North Carolina. The MORETZ family must have been relieved and excited to finally receive Johannes for his final designation. No doubt he staked a land grant for his own land in America. Most likely a large log cabin was constructed with the aid of the Lutheran friends somewhere North East of Liberty North Carolina. The Americanized version of the German name "MORTEZ" was adopted by some descendants as "MORRIS". While others keep the unique German name "MORTEZ" to this present day. I have gladly used this information to correct and edit this account of Johannes (John) (Petrus) Moritz (Morris): "Johannes (John) (Petrus) Moritz (Morris) was born on March 29, 1730, in Büdingen, Hesse, Germany, to Maria Elisabetha Kopp, age 39, and Heinrich Wilhelm Moritz, age 41. Johannes was baptized 20 March 1731, and was the son of Wilhelm Moritz, a tailor in the Vorstatt, He immigrated to America in 1750 on the ship Osgood from Rotterdam, Netherlands to Philadelphia with Capt. William Wilkie. There is an account of this passage by a Lutheran minister that is still in print: Journey to Pennsylvania by Gottlieb Mittelberger. He arrived in Randolph County, NC in 1753 where he married Margaret Reimberg in 1760, and they had four daughters and one son, Christian (1761-1807). He died on January 9, 1809."
