L. Blakeney of Des Moines, last Saturday morning after an illness of a few weeks. The remains were brought to Murray Monday morning and at 2 o'clock funeral services were conducted in the Murray M. E. church by the pastor Rev C. W. Proctor, after which the body was interred in the Union cemetery to rest by the side of that of his companion. Mr. Blakeney, a very highly respected Christian gentleman, was among the very early settlers of Clarke county, having come here away back in '69 just after the railroad had reached here and the country was yet one wide expanse, practically untouched by the hand of civilization. From those years until the passing of his companion in 1902, he lived and toiled on the farm, and had his part in the settlement of the country. But in later years, as the infirmities of old age crept up on him, he moved to Murray where he resided until a few weeks ago when he was removed to the son's home in Des Moines, on account of illness. Mr. Blakeney will be greatly missed. Although nearing ninety years of age, he was unusually active of mind and body until overtaken by his last illness, and enjoyed spending much of his time up town visiting with his friends which added to his wide acquaintance and number of friends who will miss him. OBITUARY John A. Blakeney was born in Putman county, West Virginia, August 27, 1834 and departed this life Aug. 6, 1921, at Des Moines, Iowa, aged 86 years, 11 months and 10 days. He was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Racer, November 10, 1858. There were born to this union four sons and one daughter; three sons and the daughter survive, viz: B. F. Blakney of Ogalla, Neb.: Joseph L. Blakeney of Des Moines, Ia. Mrs. Addie Abernathy and William Blakeney of St. Edwards, Nebraska. Walter died infancy. His wife departed this life November 11, 1902. The deceased with hid family emigrated to Fulton county, Illinois, in 1861 where they lived until 1869, when they came to Clarke county, Iowa, where he has lived until about four weeks ago when he took sick and went to his son's home in Des Moines.
