Hearing the lads terrified cries, the girl rushed out from her home followed by her mother; the feeling of the latter may be imagined as she saw her daughter throw herself into the waters to try to rescue the perishing youth. A Real Heroine A Dyersville paper gives the following account of the young girls heroic action. It was the first day of the holiday vacation and young Christoph had hurriedly completed the work assigned to him at home and taking his skates went to the river at the Black bridge, to enjoy a few hours skating. He had been on the ice a short time, and was going up the stream when he came to the swift current, a few rods north of the bridge: the ice gave way under him and he sank. Girl To The Rescue The cries of the unfortunate youth for help, were heard by Miss Eva Conrad, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Conrad who live nearby and running to the banks of the river she found young Christoph struggling in the water still appealing for help. Miss Conrad rushed out on the ice and endeavoring to save the boy she also went down. By the time W. B. Strang, pump-men for the Great Western, who were working near the depot, arrived at the river bank and succeeded in rescuing the heroic young lady, but the youth had already sank for the last time. Miss Conrad, by extending her arms out on the surface of the ice managed to keep from getting under ice until assistance arrived. Steve Strang ventured out on the thin ice and removed her from her perilous position. Search For The Body An immediate search was instituted by the large crowd that had gathered, the ice was cut away and in about a half an hour later the body was recovered. He was found but a few feet from the spot where he went down. He was taken to the home of Henry Goerdt and a physician was called, but all efforts to restore life were to no avail.
