Jacob and Susan had four sons who are buried in Saint John's Cemetery: John Nicholas II (1827-1911), James William (1835-1925), Jacob Peter, Jr. (1839-1905) and George H. (1845-1925). In Mary Grace Bachtel-DePollo's book: "The History of the Bachtel Family of Garrett and Preston Counties (1986), Nicholas Gauer is described as being the original family pioneer who came into the Red House Area of what was then Allegany County, MD in the first decade of the 1800's. She states that he was a Revolutionary War Veteran and had a family of 10 children. He is listed as dying in 1832 or earlier. The name of his wife and their burial location are not provided in this book. There is no FAG memorial page for him. - Nicholas is most likely the father of John Nicholas I and Jacob Peter, Sr. ; as well as the grandfather of the Gauers who's graves have tombstones in Saint John's Cemetery. Some descendants of these early Gauers later changed the spelling of the family last name into "Gower"; and some of these are buried in the nearby Gortner Cemetery and the original Oakland Cemetery. John A. Gauer was the second husband of Ann Marie "Mariah" (Roth) Hauser Gauer. Together they had a daughter: Effie Elizabeth (Gauer) Burke (1883-1973). - Memorial #53009861 There was originally a photo of the tombstone, which he shares with his wife, attached to this memorial in 2020. It has now been removed and the stone is no longer on display in the cemetery! - Ray Sant.
