Hanson was born June 22, 1841, at Copenhagen, Denmark, and passed away at the Crowell Memorial Home at Blair, Nebraska, January 6, at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 15 days. He left his native land at the age of fourteen years to become a sailor and for twelve years followed this vocation. He was able to relate some thrilling experiences from his years of travel, having sailed around the world twice and visited every seaport on earth. He later decided to go west and with a group emigrated to Emerson, Iowa, but before reaching their destination the party broke up and Mr. Hanson landed in Lyons in 1869, where he started farming five miles southwest of Lyons. The early years on the farm were most strenuous and for the first four years the work was done with an ox team. The nearest market for wheat or products of any kind was Fremont, Nebr., a distance that took two days to go to market and two days to return at that time. He had lived to see the plains and what was thought to be a waste land developed into one of the best agricultural districts of the United States, and he with other pioneers had a part in the progress. In 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie A. Torrey of Haverill, Massachusetts, and to this union fifteen children were born, two dying in infancy and a daughter, Alice Shellberg succumbed in 1897. Mrs. Hanson preceded him in death in 1902. He was of a kindly nature, a loving and providing husband and father. Years ago he became a member of the Methodist church of Lyons donating liberally to the building of the present church and parsonage. After spending nearly forty years on the farm he retired from active work and until two and one-half years ago, when he took up his residence at the Crowell Memorial Home in Blair, he had residence with his children, spending some time with each of them. He enjoyed to travel and after he gave up his life work on the farm, he visited places of interest to him in the south and west. When old age came on to deprive him of the good health he had enjoyed the greater part of his life, he thought it best that he go to the Crowell Memorial Home for the balance of his days and he praised the management of the home for the care which he received there. Hanson of Lyons; Charles Hanson of Los Angeles, Calif.; Jennie A. of Newcastle, Nebr.; Guy Hanson of Cody, Wyo.; Lillie Gillihan of Omaha; Effie Nash of Omaha; Myrtle Jones of Maskell, Nebr.; Roy Hanson of Coleman, S.Dak.; and Milo R. Hanson of Hoskins, Nebr. The funeral services were held from the Methodist church at Lyons on Tuesday, January 10, with Rev. W.A. Albright in charge. Interment was made in the Lyons cemetery.
