Kilness, another of the sturdy pioneers who founded South Dakota, closed a life of usefulness early on Sunday morning when he passed away in a Minneapolis hospital following a second operation for an old complaint. He had been operated upon ten days previously and had rallied successfully, but could not withstand the second shock. His ailment was cancer of the bladder. His extreme age of 74 was against him and the fact that he had been able to take little nourishment for some time had weakened him too much. Mr. Kilness was one of the earliest settlers in Minnehaha County, coming here in the spring of 1873 and settling on the homestead five and a half miles southeast of Dell Rapid where he lived until he died - forty seven years later. In time he added to his holdings until he had three fine quarter sections of land all in one piece. The deceased was born in Norway, September 22, 1846. In the spring of 1866 he came to America and in 1871 was married at Zumbrota, Minn., to Miss Marit Trelstadgjaerdet. They farmed in Minnesota for two years and then settled in Dakota for the rest of their lives, in Logan township. A large family was born to them, and besides the widow the following children survive: Albert Kilness, New Effington, S.D.; Peter, at Valley City, N.D.; Mrs. Oluf Hegge, Dell Rapids; the Rev. J. B. Kilness, Meckling, S.D.; Julia M. Kilness, Dell Rapids; P.G. Kilness, Marquis, S.D.; O.B. Kilness, Sioux Falls; Alice Kilness, Dell Rapids; A.B. Kilness, Dell Rapids; Mrs. G.L. Nedrud, Minot, N.D.; G.W. Kilness, Dell Rapids. The funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon, from the farm home at 1 o'clock and from St. Paul's' Church at 2 o'clock, conduction by the Rev. Mr. Larsgaard of Garretson, the pastor of St. Pauls' Church. Mr. Kilness had been ailing for several years, but it was only this summer that his sickness took an acute from. He suffered severely at times, but bore it uncomplainingly. He was a splendid citizen and did his share in making the wild Dakota territory into the beautiful and prosperous place it new it.
