McEntire died at his home near St. Joe at half past five o'clock last Saturday morning of catarrhal fever, after an illness of fifteen days duration. Judge McEntire was born in Rutherford county, N.C., on the 21st day of February, 1818, hence he was seventy five years, eight months and thirteen days old at the time of his death. He was married to Miss S.L. Gates on December 26, 1839 and moved to Arkansas in the year 1851, first settling in Marion county and removed to Searcy County in 1860. He became a member of the Baptist church in 1845, since which time he has been a devoted Christian worker. His door latch was always on the outside where all who hungered could enter and partake at his bountiful table. He moved to Missouri in 1864 when devastation of the War compelled almost everybody to abandon their homes and seek refuge; but returned three years later, and with the vim, courage and usual industry characterizing those old time parents, he succeeded in restoring his farm to a happy home for his remaining days, which time he was always in comfortable circumstances. In 1884, when the people of Searcy County dissolved their allegiance to the two old political parties forming a third party, he was "par excellence," chosen County and Probate Judge by the largest vote ever polled in the county before or isnce that time. During his administration, as County and Probate Judge, the county met with the misfortune to lose the courthouse, by an incendiary; and, although under these embarrassing circumstances, his administration was an honor to himself and a credit to the county. In 1892 a vacancy occurred in the county judge's office, under which state of affairs a special election was necessary. The Republican party nominated H.P. Hemphill as their candidate; the Democrats making no nomination. Under these circumstances John C. Earl announced himself as a candidate for the position, subject to the vote of the people, as the announcement was made; but we learned afterwards that he desired to announce himself subject to the will of the Democratic party, but owing to a misunderstanding on the part of the printer, the announcement was made as above stated, as the file in this office shows. In the course of time, while awaiting a proclamation for the special election the Republican party becoming dissatisfied with their candidate, Judge Rambo was induced to take the field whereupon, by agreement between his and Mr. Earl's friends, Judge McEntire withdrew from the race in favor of Mr. Earl and the Democratic party, and the result was the election of Judge Rambo as his own successor. Judge McEntire was twice married; first marriage being of fifty two years duration when on the 17th of May, 1890 death ended the long and happy life of the first marriage; and the 10thd ay of July, 1891 he was married to Mrs. Malinda Dudley, which union made his remaining days happy and content. By his first marriage, seven children were born, four of whom are living. The eldest, H.A. McEntire, living near Murillo, is 50 years old; Mary, the only daughter, always lived with her father; Henry C. Lives near Blanco, and William has always lived on an adjoining farm to his father's. Judge McEntire leaves 28 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. The places left vacant will not soon be filled; his aid and counsel will long be missed by his brethren in the church. His children are all members of the same church with him and have abundant assurance that their separation from him is not final.
