Richards, 90, Edgewood's Last Civil War veteran, died Monday from a heart ailment after eight months' illness. Funeral services were held in the Congregational Church, Wednesday, the Rev. Charles H. True in charge. Burial was in Greenhill Cemetery. Mr. Richards was born June 29, 1846, in Buffalo, N.Y., son of Abel and Anne Ferry Richards. Eighty-five years ago he came to Iowa with his widowed mother and settled in Lodomillo Township, north of Edgewood. He was educated in the rural schools of the township which he walked three miles every day to attend. When he was fifteen years old the war between the North and the South was declared. He helped his aunt with the farm work while his uncle was away at the front until he was 17 when he enlisted with Company B, Fourth Iowa Cavalry, under Colonel Peters of Delhi. They were sent to Vicksburg and then to Guntown, Tenn., where their troops suffered a defeat and between 5,000 and 6,000 men were imprisoned or killed. The brigade in which Mr. Richards served was then sent in pursuit of General Marmaduke on a raid into Missouri. He was captured with 600 prisoners. Mr. Richards' horse was shot from under him in this encounter and he with other men who lost their horses were sent down the Missouri River from Jefferson City to St. Louis in charge of the prisoners and twenty pieces of artillery. During his stay in Saint Louis he cast his first vote for president, Abraham Lincoln. Next orders sent him to Vicksburg where they arrived at nightfall to go immediately into camp. Almost at once the bugle blew for them to embark for Nashville. The night before they arrived the Union forces won a victory over the Rebels. During the next three weeks they made raids and captured 12,000 cavalry troops. The rest of their campaigning was done in Alabama and Georgia under Generals Sherman and Allen. After the surrender of General Lee it was three months before the battalion in which Mr. Richards was serving, seven miles out of Atlanta, Ga., could leave for their northern home. They had to stop and re-build a bridge which had been destroyed in the fighting at the Chatahoosie River. For several years after the war Mr. Richards farmed near Edgewood. Soon after his return he married Miss Lydia A. Allaway. Two sons were born to them, Ora Richards of Buffalo, N.Y. and Les Richards of Manchester. Several years later he married Miss Adelle Palmer and they were the parents of five children, three of whom are living, Mrs. Margaret Harris of near Greeley, Harold Richards of Chicago and Miss Gretchen Richards of New York City. When the youngest girl was a child the mother died. In 1922 Mr. Richards married Mrs. Sarah Hammond, who survives together with the five children and two grandsons, Robert Richards of Chicago and Junior Richards of Edgewood. After a few years' farming Mr. Richards moved to town and took up the carpentry trade. There are not more than thirty houses in Edgewood on which he had not worked and he had lathed practically every business house in town as well as the schoolhouse which was his last big project before he retired. As long as there was a post of the Grand Army of the Republic in Edgewood he was an active attendant and for several years after this post surrendered its charter he attended in Manchester where he transferred his membership.
