Ryon had passed away at his home near Oakes, North Dakota although it was known that he had not been in the best of health all winter. His son, A. D. started immediately to help bring the remains back to this place for burial. They arrived here on the one o'clock train Tuesday and the funereal was held in the Methodist Church conducted by the pastor, Rev. Gerkin. Mr. Ryon was born April 27, 1836 in Wayne County, Pennsylvania and was 79 years, 1 month and 8 days old at the time of his death. When but two years of age his parents moved to Illinois and there he grew to manhood and there he married Llzzie Dunbar in December 1863. To this union were born four children all of whom survive the father. They are Mrs. Lizzie M. Craig of Oakes, North Dakota, A. D., Hugh L. and Jay Ryon all of this community. There are also thirteen grandchildren. Mr. Ryon was an old soldier and at the time of his death was a member of the G. A. R. Post at Oakes. He served one year in Co. K., 8th Illinois cavalry until honorably discharged. After the close of the war, he moved to Missouri but three years after he moved back to Illinois to DeKalb where they lived until 1884 when he and his family moved to this community and settled upon the section of land that he bought just across the township line in Washington township. The improvements were then meager but he soon added to this until in a very short time he had one of the best improved farms in this section. He lived upon this place, excepting a short time in Laurens, for twenty-five years but these were pioneer days and it will be hard to estimate what influence his fenced lands, well kept house and grounds, shade trees and orchard had in causing others to improve their naked acres. A few years ago he invested heavily in North Dakota lands and in 1909 with an unquenched pioneer spirit, he moved to Oakes, North Dakota to be near these lands that he might improve and superintend the improving of them. He leaves to mourn his departure, the beloved wife and mother, the children and grandchildren as mentioned above and one brother A. H. Ryon of Wakefield, Kansas, who with his wife arrived too late for the funeral but the remains were held until they arrived on the Rock Island 4:20. Burial was then made in the Laurens cemetery. The old soldiers and old settlers are being mustered out one by one but they have left us a rich heritage.
