Description	:	John was so dissatisfied with his life as a farmer in Ohio that he enlisted 19 Aug 1862 for three years in the Union army. At the age of 41, he was the oldest enlistee of the 123rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company A. John was mustered in at Camp Monrovia, Monroeville, Huron County, Ohio on 24 Sep 1862. This regiment was attached to Railroad Division in western (i.e., West) Virginia and protected the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in that area until March, 1863, when it was ordered to Winchester, Virginia and made several raids up (South in) the Shenandoah Valley. The Regiment and their Brigade was surrendered at the second battle of Winchester, Virginia on 15 June 1863, during Lee's raid into Pennsylvania. The Regiment was marched to Richmond, Virginia. The enlisted men were soon paroled while the officers remained at Libby Prison for eleven months. It was common for captives to be exchanged one-for-one and returned to their side to again engage in battlefield hostilities. John was paroled and rejoined his regiment in Martinsburg, West Virginia (West Virginia just become a state) where his regiment was on provost duty. The regiment was soon refitted and spent a year guarding the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad between Harper's Ferry (West Virginia) and Monocracy Junction (at Frederick, Virginia). The regiment participated in the battle at New Market, on the 15th of May. Later it fought at Port Republic and helped destroy the Virginia Military Institute at Lexington. It then embarked on the disastrous Lynchburg campaign and took part in the severe retreat to the Kanawha Valley. July found the Regiment again in the Shenandoah Valley guarding against Confederate Lieut. Gen. Jubal A. Early's retreat from Washington. The Army of West Virginia, of which the 123rd formed a part, was placed under the command of Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, fighting at Winchester and Cedar Creek. On the morning of 19 October 1864, Jubal Early with about 17,000 hungry and poorly equipped solders, lead a desperate surprise attack against Philip Sheridan's over 30,000 troops camped in the Shenandoah Valley along the Valley Pike (now US 11) near Cedar Creek. John was still a private and was now attached to Brigadier General George Crook's VIII Corps. They were encamped east of the creek and south of the pike (just NE of Strasburg). This was the first infantry corps to be attacked by Early's troops at 5:00 a.m. Although Early initially drove many of the Union troops from the camp, the Ohio 123rd reportedly held fast. That afternoon, Sheridan achieved a complete defeat of Early's Confederate troops - settling the contention over the Shenandoah Valley. However, John had been wounded and captured early on the morning of 19 Oct 1864 at Cedar Creek. The official records say that John "died Nov. 25, 1864, in Rebel Prison". His rank was still private. According to accounts of surviving captives, Cedar Creek prisoners were marched to Staunton, "moved" to Richmond, and "following a short stay", taken by railroad to Salisbury Prison in North Carolina, arriving on 4 Nov, 1864. Grant had halted all general exchanges in April 1864. The prisoners at Salisbury were released on 16 Feb 1865 - too late for John. One third of the prisoners at Salisbury died, John apparently among them. John is not listed on any list of deaths in Richmond or Salisbury Prison in 1864 or 1865. He probably died in Salisbury and was buried in a mass grave at the National Cemetery there.
