Description	:	John was the son of Henry and Mary Bickford Swan. He moved with his parent from Ohio to Iowa in the late 1850's. When war broke out between the Sates, he enlisted to serve. On 28 Feb 1862 he became a member of the 12th Illinois Cavalry, Company E serveing as a Corporal. Shortly thereafter, he became sick and was furlough beginning March 20, 1862.
