Read More	Wood, John Aaron -"A"- June 17, 1870 - June 6, 1941 One Man Killed, Four Hurt When Lake Building Falls Accident Occurs As Old Shoe Store Is Being Torn Down The upper floor of a building they were tearing down collapsed Friday afternoon at Clear Lake, killing one workman and injuring four others, three of them seriously. A. Wood, 72, Clear Lake, died after his skull, left chest, elbow and shoulder were fractured. The injured: John Nesheim, 66, Clear Lake, seriously hurt, crushed chest and possibly other injuries. Floyd Scarrow, 21, Hampton, broken pelvis, suffering from severe shock. Ed Hemingway, 61, Clear Lake, broken wrist and possibly broken back. Frank Jones, 58, Clear Lake, wrenched back and bruised jaw. The men were wrecking the Knudson building, an abandoned shoe shop at 111 South Fourth Street. Hemmingway and Jones on the second floor and the other three on the ground floor. Ted Hall, Des Moines contractor for whom they were working said that he had just left the building when the upper floor fell. He gave as his opinion that the upper floor was supported by a soil pipe and that when it was broken from below it permitted the joists and flooring to fall in one piece. The roof and walls down to the second floor slab had already been removed and collapse of the floor pulled the walls down with it so that the building was practically leveled after the crash. Part of the side wall was folded under the slab as it fell, helping to cushion the fall and preventing the slab from falling quite flat on the workmen. Other workmen and spectators who rushed to help succeeded in lifting the debris from the men after about five minutes of work. Wood already was dead. Neshelm, Hemmingway and Jones were taken to the office of Dr. A. B. Phillips next door while Scarrow was rushed to the Park hospital in Mason City to which Nesheim and Hemmingway also were taken later. The attending physician said that their exact injuries could not be determined until x-rays were taken. Jones was released to go to his home after being treated by Dr. Phillips. Wood is survived by his wife, Belladora (Hogue), two sons, Alva of Britt and Ezra of near Glidden; and five daughters, Mrs. John Griggs, Britt,; Mrs. Leo Miller, Mason City; Mrs. Frank Cinkle, Sioux Falls, S. Dak.; Mrs Martin Daniels, Grimes, and Ruby, of Clear Lake. Funeral services will be held at the home, 310 South Linden avenue, Monday at 1:15 o'clock and at the Methodist Church in Britt at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. Clair Hicks, pastor of the Clear Lake Church of Christ will conduct the rites. Burial will be in the Britt Cemetery. Members of the Britt Masonic Lodge will be pallbearers and will conduct a Masonic service at the cemetery. Wood who was a farmer for many years, was born June 17, 1870, at Liberty Kentucky. Wood Held Monday Funeral Service At Home; Burial in Britt Cemetery Clear Lake-- A short funeral service for -A- Wood, who died Friday afternoon from injuries received when the upper floor of the old Knudson building at Clear Lake, which was being wrecked, collapsed on him, was held at the Wood home, 10 Linden Street, Monday afternoon at 1:15 o'clock. The Rev. Clair Hicks, pastor of the Clear Lake Church of Christ, conducted the service, with members of the Clear Lake Masonic Lodge, Adolph Mathies, Harry E. Mason, Thorkel Sondrol, Sr., Charles C. Hanson, John Perkins and R. J. Aurdul as pallbearers. Mr. and Mrs. James Bailey were in charge of the flowers. Further rites were held at 2:30 o'clock in the Methodist Church at Britt, where Mr. Wood had been a farmer for 20 years prior in moving to Clear Lake. Alec Thompson of Clear Lake conducted the Masonic services at the Evergreen Cemetery at Britt where the burial was made. Among the immediate relatives who arrived for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Archumbolt and family from Hampton, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Miller, Mason City, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cinkle of Sioux Falls, S. Dak., Mr. and Mrs. Martin Daniels and family of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Daniels of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Orvil Daniels of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Wood and family of Glidden, and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wood and family of Woden.
