The deceased was born in New York City March 25, 1836, of Scotch-Irish parentage. His parents later removed to Pennsylvania and in 1852 he removed to Clinton county, Iowa, where he was married in 1865 and where he lived until he moved to his farm north of Everly in 1884. Here he lived for many years, later moving into town and leaving in April, 1916, to spend his last days where he could have the care of his son in Brainerd, Minnesota. The deceased was a veteran of the Civil war enlisting in 1861 and serving until the war ended. He was in many battles, was for a time a prisoner at Vicksburg and was with Sherman on his march from Atlanta to the sea and was at Richmond at the final grand review when the soldiers were mustered out. He served in various offices in Clay county, having been trustee, treasurer and assessor in Waterford township and was elected as County supervisor which office he filled many years. He is survived by his wife and five children, Carl Adams of Brainerd, Minnesota, Mrs. May Barto of Fairmont, Minnesota, John Adams of Pettibone, North Dakota, Mrs. Pearl Ogilvie of Edmore, North Dakota, and Mrs. Effie Mumm of Steele, North Dakota, all of whom were present at the funeral. A brother, James Adams, and wife of George, Iowa, and a niece, Mrs. Wm. Wright, and husband of Lake Preston, South Dakota, were also present. The remains were taken to Spencer for burial in Riverside cemetery and the services were conducted by the Masonic lodge of which he had long been a member, an address being given also by Rev. Taylor at the Metheodist church. Deceased was a man of fine character, upright and honest, and leaves many friends in this vicinity. The sympathy of the community is extended to his bereaved relatives. Spencer Reporter, Spencer, Clay County, Iowa; January 9, 1918.
