John Ross officiating. Burial was in the Bainbridge Cemetery in Huntley with military honors by the U.S. Marine Corps Military Guard of Kansas City, Kan. He was born Feb. 10, 1925, in Macon to Albert and Hannah (Frerichs) Decker. On Aug. 22, 1948, he married Alice Richman in Alma. She died Dec.3, 2003. Survivors include his son, Ted Decker and his wife, Marlene, of Huntley; brothers, Harold Decker and his wife, Beverly, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Walter Decker of Sullivan, Mo.; sister, Viola Peterson of Alma; sister-in-law, Lois Nelson and her husband, Byron, of Holdrege; granddaughters, Kathleen Tonkin and her husband, Riley, and Lisa Colbert and her husband, Wesley, and their daughter, Hanna Noel, all of Lincoln; other relatives; and a host of friends. He was baptized in infancy at Zion Lutheran Church in Macon and was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Alma where he remained a lifelong member. He moved to a farm with his parents three miles north of Alma when he was 2 years old. He started school at Pun'kin Ridge Rural School District 48 near Alma through the fourth grade. In 1935, he moved to a farm two miles north and four miles east of Alma. He then attended the fifth and sixth grades at Greenville Rural School District 5, also near Alma. In 1937, he moved to a farm one mile south and four miles east where he attended the seventh and eighth grades at Gorman Rural School District 72. In 1939, he moved to Alma and attended high school at Alma where he graduated in 1942. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for one semester in September 1946. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps on April 10, 1943, at San Diego. He served at Jacksonville, N.C., Cherry Point, N.C., El Centro, Calif., and Okinawa, Japan, during World War II and was honorably discharged on March 27, 1946. He returned to Alma where he resided from 1946 to 1950. He and his wife were married at Peace Lutheran Church in Alma. On Sept. 18, 1950, he was recalled by the Marine Corps to active duty during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on Nov. 21, 1952. He returned to Alma in 1952 where he resided until 1957. On Feb. 18, 1957, he re-enlisted in the U.S. Marines and served in El Toro, Calif., Barbers Point, Hawaii, again at El Toro, Millington, Tenn., Washington, D.C., again at Millington, Jacksonville, Okinawa, and twice in Vietnam, during which time he was a temporary warrant officer and later a chief warrant officer, grade II. After serving as a warrant officer, he again became an enlisted man. He then served in Havelock, N.C., Indiana and Iowa and retired and was honorably discharged on March 1, 1979, at Costa Mesa, Calif., as a master sergeant. He had served a total of 26 years, two months and six days in the U.S. Marine Corps. He had received the Expert Pistol Award twice, the Presidential Unit Citation Award twice, the Navy Unit Citation Award, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean Service medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze service stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and Frame, the Vietnam Meritorious Unit Service Action Color, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal six times. He and his wife moved to Huntley in 1979. He had lived at 804 Fourth St. in Alma since June 2004. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Faye Cady American Legion Post 118 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5884, all of Alma. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his father on July 15, 1957; his mother on May 18, 1983; brother, Wilbur Decker and his wife, Maxine; brothers-in-law, Arnold Peterson, Cletus Richman and his wife, Eva, and William Richman and his wife, Elaine; and sister-in-law, Isla Hansen and her husband, Roger.
