Melvin Shafer conducted the service, and Mrs. Glenn Miller sang, "The Old Rugges Coss," accompaniedby Mrs. Mel Shafer. John Leiding, son of the late Chris and Sena leiding was born December 5, 1895 at Plainview, Nebraska, and departed this life at noon at the Plainview hospital, March 22, 1979 at the age of 83 years, 3 months, and 17 days. Wen John was seven years old he moved with his parents to a farm near Orchard where he attended school and grew up. He entered the service during World War I and while there, attended the bakery and cooking school and was made first cook. On September 12, 1934, he married Cecil Boelter Clark and they lived on farms near Royal and Brunswick, Nebraska. In 1943, they moved to their farm northwest of Orchard where they lived. In January of this year they purchased a home in Orchard and were planning on moving to town this spring. His entire life was devoted to farming and his family. He was very active in the American Legion and spent much time with the youth of the Midge and Legion baseball programs. In 1969, he was given a lifetime membership by the victory Post #136 of Orchard for his outstanding work with the American Legion youth for over 20 years. His five sons all took part during those years. Survivors include his wife, Cecil; son Don of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Gordon of Orchard; Russell of North Platte; Keith of South Sioux City; and Kenneth of Plainview, 20 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 2 sisters; Katie Harvey of Tilden and Margaret Reinke of Clearwater; 4 brothers, Fred of California; Bill of Norfolk; Chris of Grand Island and Henry of Orchard, other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, his daughter, Darlene and son-in-law Marvin Moats.
