Winter Death Took Place After Operation Performed at Bismarck The late John Albert Winter, of Douglas, North Dakota, and formerly of Fontanelle, was born July 17, 1878, near Mendota, La Salle county, Illinois. His parents were George and Anna Winter. When he was a lad of about four years the Winter family came to Iowa and settled in this community. John received his education in the rural schools of Adair county. When about fifteen years of age he received the necessary catechetical instruction by the venerable Rev. Freytag and was received as a communicant member of the Lutheran church by the rite of confirmation. February 7, 1898, John Winter entered into holy wedlock with Mary Caroline Lorenz, his now bereaved widow. The union was blessed with one daughter, Minnie. About 1903 Mr. and Mrs. Winter moved to Creston, where he was employed in the Burlington railroad shops. Eight years later the family moved to North Dakota and located near Douglas, taking up farm work. For many years the deceased suffered much from a disturbance of the digestive organs. The ailment increased with years to such an extent that at last he thought it necessary to look for medical and surgical help. Accompanied by a neighbor and friend, Mrs. Might, of Douglas, Mr. Winter went to the hospital at Bismarck, September 5th. Three days later the operation for an ulcerated stomach was performed. But the patient was beyond surgical help, his vitality being very low and he did not withstand the shock of the operation, but fell asleep on Sunday, September 10th at the age of 44 years, 1 month and 23 days. He is survived by his wife and daughter, his aged mother, Mrs. Geo. Winter; three brothers, Fred, Frederick and Henry; and four sisters, Mrs. Herman Miller, of Creston; Mrs. Christ Marckmann, of Fontanelle; Mrs. Ray Dickey, of Greenfield; Mrs. Oscar Schwannebeck, of Fontanelle. Of the numerous other relatives and friends we especially mention his aged aunt, Mrs. George Weinheimer. The body was shipped from Bismarck, N.D., to Fontanelle, arriving here Thursday afternoon. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Lutheran church and were conducted by the rev. W.H. Kurtz. Interment was made in the Fontanelle cemetery.
