Allan 1883-1951 ---------------------------------------- Obituary - Perth Courier - Oct.29,1959- There entered into rest at the Rideau Health and Occupational Centre, Ottawa, on Monday, Sept. 28, 1959, Mr. John Alexander Ferguson of Snow Road, Ontario, in his 80th year. Mr. Ferguson was born December 1, 1879 in Scotland, the son of Peter Ferguson and Margaret Stewart, and came to Canada with his parents when he was 4 years of age. He spent a great part of his life at Powassan, Ontario, and it was there he enlisted with D Company, 162nd Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, and served overseas during the First World War, 1914 - 1919, obtaining the rank of Sargeant. Upon his return from overseas, he was employed by the HEPC, High Falls. On December 15, 1920 he married Viola Allan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Allan at their cottage at Dalhousie Lake. In partnership with his brother Robert, he operated a General Store and Post Office at McDonald's Corners from the spring of 1920 until his retirement in April 1948. After his wife's death in February. 1951, he made his home with her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Geddes at Snow Road until ill health necessitated his entry into hospital in 1958. He was a Presbyterian by Faith, and a member of both Cornucopia and Portia Lodges, IOOF, Snow Road. He was predeceased by two brothers and one sister - Donald and Robert Ferguson, and Janet, Mrs. James Duncan of Powassan. While in business at McDonald's Corners he served for a period on the Township Council Board of Dalhousie and North Sherbrooke. The funeral was held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Geddes to the Presbyterian Church, Snow Road, on Sept. 30 and was conducted by the Minister, Rev. S. Duncan. Interment was in Crawford's Cemetery. Services at the grave were conducted by the Minister and the members of the Odd fellows Lodge. Pallbearers were four nephews, Ray Millar, Arthur Clark, Ralph Geddes and Jim Geddes, and John McLellan and Milton Purdon of McDonald's Corners. The beautiful floral tributes and memorial cards testified to the high esteem in which Mr. Ferguson was held. --- (note - HEPC stands for Hydro Electric Power Commission, and IOOF stands for Independent Order of Odd Fellows)
