John Hudson, a well-known farmer living near Yarmouth, was so badly injured in a runaway accident Friday afternoon late (August 11, 1916), that he died from his injuries Sunday night (August 13). He was in Morning Sun Friday afternoon, and as he was going home the team he was driving became frightened and ran away, and Mr. Hudson was thrown out. He received a bad scalp wound and other injuries. The accident happened within a half mile of his home, a neighbor finding Mr. Hudson lying in the road unconscious. Medical aid was at once summoned from Morning Sun and Yarmouth. An operation was decided upon and Dr. Tombau was called up from Burlington. Medical aid was to no avail, however, and he passed away, as noted above, without ever regaining consciousness. Two of the sons, Willis and Pleasant, who live at Arapahoe Nebraska, and J. A. of Holbrook, were summoned to his bedside and reached home before the father's death. The funeral services were held from the Methodist church in Morning Sun Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Reverend C. Cray Jones of Yarmouth. The interment was in Elmwood cemetery, his six sons acting as pallbearers. John Hudson was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, March 13, 1838. He spent his boyhood and youth in Pennsylvania, coming with his parents to Iowa, in 1854, and lived in the vicinity of Yarmouth continuously since that time. On March 12, 1862, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Dowell. To this union were born nine children: six sons and one daughter survive him: Willis D. and Pleasant G. of Arapahoe, Nebraska; Charles H. and Mrs. Lucy Frances Obermann of Mt. Union; N. Edward of Morning Sun; J. A. of Holbrook, Nebraska; and Allan of Yarmouth. The wife passed away October 20, 1907; one daughter and one son have also gone on before. On October 26th, 1911, he was united in marriage to Catherine Dowell of Gladstone, Illinois, who survives him. Two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Clark of New London, Iowa, and Mrs. Elizabeth Perkins of Wapello, and twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild, together with those previously mentioned, remain to mourn their loss. Many friends and neighbors also hold him in kindly remembrance.
