Description	:	GLOUCESTER — John Alvan Maclay Jr., of Yorktown, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at his summer home, "Fairfield," in Gloucester County at the age of 87. He was born Jan. 21, 1919, in Newport News, and was the son of the late Ruth Smith and John Alvan Maclay. He was a graduate of the Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School and served in the U.S. Army Corps during World War II. He retired from the Shipyard in 1983. Read More	GLOUCESTER — John Alvan Maclay Jr., of Yorktown, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at his summer home, "Fairfield," in Gloucester County at the age of 87. He was born Jan. 21, 1919, in Newport News, and was the son of the late Ruth Smith and John Alvan Maclay. He was a graduate of the Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School and served in the U.S. Army Corps during World War II. He retired from the Shipyard in 1983. An avid sailor, he competed in many of the regattas sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association both as a Mobjack and a J-24 skipper. He also was a lifelong ham radio enthusiast. Sisters, Nancy Garvey and Jean Campbell, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Martha Robins Maclay; three sons, Gary Maclay and wife, Martha, of Free Union, Va., Todd Maclay and wife, Sherry, of Yorktown and Nelson Maclay of Hayes; grandchildren, Graeme Maclay of Crozet, Va., Anna Maclay and husband, David Fisher, of Conway, Mass., and Kate Maclay of Ft. Collins, Colo., also, Michelle, Margaret, Amanda and Adrienne Maclay of Yorktown; one great-granddaughter, Leora Fisher of Conway, Mass.; and four nephews, William N. Campbell of Ponte Vedra, Fla., Michael Garvey of Boston and Lee and Will Garvey of Arlington. A graveside service, officiated by the Rev. Carleton Bakkum of Grace Episcopal Church, Yorktown, was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, in Abingdon Episcopal Church Cemetery, Gloucester. The family received friends in the parish hall following the service. We would like to thank Riverside Walter Reed Hospice for the loving care provided for Jack and his family during his final days.
