Bob King Transcribed from an obituary dated April 25, 1946 and held by the Center Point Historical Society Funeral services for John A. Cress who passed away Thursday afternoon of last week at the home of his son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Oliphant were held Sunday afternoon at two-thirty o'clock at the Primitive Baptist Church south of Center Point. Rev. C. C. Miner of Cedar Rapids was the officiating minister. Music was furnished by Mrs. Jack Ashlock and L. J. Dennis, accompanied by Miss Norma Jean Oliphant. Burial was in the cemetery in the church yard. The pall bearers were Carl Andrews, Ray Andrews, Clarence Andres, Clyde Scott, Erwin Scott and Paul Stewart. The following life sketch was read at the service: John Ameriah Cress was born on a farm north of Toddville December 12, 1880. He was united in marriage with Minerva Andrews December 24, 1901. They became the parents of three sons and one daughter, all of whom survive their parents, the mother having preceded the father in death a number of years ago. The children are Everett of Shellsburg; Forrest of Center Point; Lloyd of Central City; and Bertha (Mrs. Delmar Oliphant) of Toddville. Mr. Cress spent his entire life farming in Linn County. He was a member of the Greens' Grove Community Church. He departed from this life on April 18, 1946 at the age of 65 years, 4 months and 6 days. Mr. Cress had been in declining health for almost a year, and had submitted to surgery on several occasions to regain his health. Besides his four children, he is survived by thirteen grandchildren, two sisters – Mrs. Mina Kimball of Elk City, Oklahoma and Mrs. May Roy of Center Point; and a brother – Lafayette Cress of Owatonna, Minnesota.
