ANOTHER VETERAN CROSSES RIVER James A Furtick at Soldiers' Home Dies After Illness of About Two Weeks After an illness of about two weeks James A Furtick died at the Confederate Soldiers' Home yesterday afternoon at the age of 82 years. Mr Furtick entered the Confederate service in April, 1861, with Company F, First South Carolina volunteers, Hagood's brigade. He served with gallantry throughout the war and was held in affection by his comrades. He is survived by two sons, Jesse Furtick, who lives in St Matthews and another son, who lives in this city. Funeral arrangements had not been made last night. March 1, 1922 The State A War Vet's Final Sleep Last Thursday morning Mr John A Furtick was buried at the old Congaree Baptist Church cemetery near his old home in this county. Rev Bascom Herlong officiated at the funeral. Deceased had been, for several years, at the Confederate Home near Columbia and died there. He was born April 24, 1840, making his earthly pilmgramage 82 years, lacking less than two months. He was the father of nine children, six of whom survive as follows: William Furtick, Sam Furtick and Joe Furtick of Columbia, Lawrence Furtick of near Creston, Jesse Furtick of St Matthews and Anna Furtick Ott of near St Matthews. The dead are John E Furtick, Charlie Furtick and Mary E Furtick Rickenbaker, first wife of F G Rickenbaker. There are 48 grandchildren and 31 great grands. His widow, who was Miss Mildred Ott, died in 1911. Mr Furtick volunteered at the beginning of the Civil War and was there at the end. His friends all say that he was a brave and fearless soldier and was of a brave family. Five of the brothers went to the war and four sleep their last sleep on the old battle grounds. Two died of diseases contracted there while two were killed. John A Furtick, subject of this sketch, served in Company F, Hagood's Brigade. There can be no difference of opinion about the fact that this family of five brothers did their abundant share for their beloved Southland in that bloody conflict. Two died of disease in the service, two shot down on battlefields and the survivor returns with the honors of courage, sacrifice and patriotism to his credit.
