Friday evening at the Walter-Armstrong Chapel in Mapleton. John Andrew Carlsen, the son of John Henry and Marie (Jansen) Carlsen, was born May 20, 1922 on a farm west of Anthon, Iowa. At the age of 8 months he moved to the town of Anthon with his mother where he grew to manhood. In 1943, he entered the U.S. Army where he served his country until February 12, 1946. John was united in marriage to Charlene Newman on August 26, 1946, at Mapleton, Iowa, and since then he has spent the remainder of his life there. During that time he worked for Sulter and Company, Haubrich Construction and Green Bay Lumber. He also farmed for seven years west of Mapleton, moving into town in 1957. He then worked on construction until 1960. From 1960 until 1966, John worked for Monona County Maintenance and from 1966 to 1984 for the Iowa Department of Transportation. Charlene died February 18, 1995. John was baptized in infancy on June 25, 1922 and conformed into the Lutheran faith on April 2, 1938 at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Midway, Iowa. He has been a member of St. Mathews Lutheran Church in Mapleton since 1962 and was a member of L.L.L. and the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton. Survivors include three daughters, Patty and her husband, Bryan Hamann of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Pam Limoges of Sioux City, Iowa, and Peggy and her husband, Tom Bell of Ida Grove, Iowa; one sister, Johanna Johnson of Cherokee, Iowa: eight grandchildren, Todd, Chad and Wade Hamann, Adam and Nathan Clarey, Eric and Angie Bell and Andrew Limoges; and two great-grandchildren, Trey Bell and Jaycee Clarey. Along with his wife, Charlene, John was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter, Mary Irene and one sister, Alice Sonksen. Honorary pallbearers were Angie Bell, Trey Bell, Andrew Limoges and Jaycee Clarey. Pallbearers were Todd Hamann, Chad Hamann, Wade Hamann, Adam Clarey, Nathan Clarey and Eric Bell. Arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
