Description	:	John Appleton Hicks was born in Long Point, Canada. In 1861, at age 18: learned the blacksmith's trade in Kilbourne, Wisconsin. John Appleton Hicks married Maybelle Smith on 04 January 1874 at Exira, IA. [Maybelle was born 06 January 1855, Ross County, OH. Nine children were born to John Appleton Hicks and Maybelle (Smith) Hicks: Four sons and five daughters - 2 daughters died in infancy 1. James Alvin Hicks, b. 26 Nov 1874, d. 1940 Los Angeles, CA. He married 17 Nov 1907 Mary Hansen. Their children: Walter, Helen, Ora, all of CA. 2. Samuel Adolphus Hicks, b. 31 July 1877, d. Oct 1943, Cambridge, IA. He married in 1918 Orlena Minton. No children. 3. Ethel Gertrude Hicks Simonsen, b. 16 Feb 1882, d. 07 Sept 1968, Audubon, IA. She married 24 Dec 1914 Charles Simonsen at Craig, CO. He died 06 Nov 1943, Exira, IA. 2 Children: Lloyd Simonsen, Long Beach, CA; Phyllis, married Emmert Krogh, Exira, IA. 4.Clarence Howard Hicks, b.04 Jan 1884, d.1946, Omaha, NE. He remained single. 5. John Appleton, Hicks, Jr., b. 28 May 1887, d.19 Jan 1920 Craig, CO. He married Beatrice Lancelot. No children. 6.Delia Hicks Addington, b. 25 Nov 1889. She married 28 June 1930 John L. Addington at Minneapolis, MN. One son, John Layton Addington. Della & her son lived in San Jose, CA (in 1982). 7. Ora Belle Hicks Law, b.27 June 1892, d. 30 July 1932, Council Bluffs, IA. She married Earl G. Law. 3 Children: Gladys, Mary Jean, and Harold Law. His father James Hicks died in 1873, at the age of 58 years and his mother, whose maiden name was Marguerite Cannon died in 1880, aged 73 years. He came from a family of ten children, all of his brothers remained living in Canada. He was one of Audubon county's pioneers. He was considered to be a noble citizen and a kind and indulgent father. On the day of his funeral, the businesses closed and the businessmen went to his funeral service. His obituary was published in the Audubon County newspaper 10-06-1904
