He attended the West Nottingham Academy, graduated from Princeton College in 1760, graduated as a physician from the College of Philadelphia in 1768, becoming the first person to receive a medical degree in America, and proceeded to practice medicine in Harford County, Maryland, in 1769. During Revolutionary War, he raised a military company, served as a Major in the Continental Army and was aide-de-camp to General Anthony Wayne.
