THOMASVILLE - Rev. John Archibald McMillan, 69, NC Baptist Church leader and editor of Charity and Children, died at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem this morning after an extended illness. He was born at Riverton, Scotland County [sic], September 28, 1879, son of Archibald Alexander McMillan and Mary Amanda Johnson McMillan. He was graduated from Wake Forest College in 1902 and attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, Kentucky. He served as pastor of Baptist churches at Burnsville, Asheboro and McColl, SC. In 1922 he went to Wake Forest College and served as alumni secretary and in 1929 he came to Thomasville and served as pastor of the Mills Home Baptist Church and as associate editor of Charity and Children with the late Archibald Johnson. After the death of Mr. Johnson in 1934, Rev. Mr. McMillan was named editor. Rev. Mr. McMillan served overseas with the YMCA in World War I , was a Mason, a Rotarian, a deacon in the Mills Home Church, a trustee of Wake Forest College, and a former member of the local school board. Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Louise Fant; three daughters, Miss Louise McMillan of the home, Mrs. Richard Goldsmith of New York City and Mrs. Allen Green of Washington DC; one son, Dr. Elbert McMillan of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Dr. H. H. McMillan, missionary to China and R. L. McMillan of Raleigh; three sisters, Mrs. Charles M. Reaves of Wagram, and Misses Kate and O'Netah McMillan of Riverton. The body will remain at Green Funeral Home until 10 a.m. tomorrow, when it will be taken to Mills Home Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 o'clock by Rev. J. B. White of Hamlet. A brief graveside service will be conducted at Spring Hill Cemetery at Wagram at 3 o'clock. Within a few weeks after his birth the family moved to Riverton, Richmond (now Scotland) County, NC, which McMillan always considered his home. After graduation from Spring Hill Academy at Wagram, McMillan entered Wake Forest College. He was enrolled from 1898 to 1900 and in 1901–2, receiving a B.A. degree in 1902 after three years of study. He pitched for the baseball team and in 1901–2 was co-editor of the Wake Forest Student, a literary magazine. During 1902–3 he was president of the first Wake Forest College medical class. After practicing medicine for a year McMillan returned to the family farm so that his younger brothers could go to college. Subsequently he felt a call to the ministry and in January 1908 enrolled at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. In 1922 McMillan became alumni secretary of Wake Forest College, with duties that included counseling students, representing the college at meetings, fund-raising, and recruiting athletes. His last move came in 1929, when he went to Thomasville in the dual position of pastor of the Mills Home church, which he served until 1933, and assistant (later associate) editor of Charity and Children, the orphanage's newspaper. McMillan served as a trustee of Wake Forest College from 1933 to 1943. He was also a trustee of North Carolina College in Durham and a member of the Thomasville School Board and Rotary Club. On December 27, 1906, in Campobello, SC, he married Louise Culpepper Fant, of Edgefield County, SC, who had recently gone to Riverton to teach school. They had four children, Elbert Alexander, M.D., and Louise Fant, who were residents of Winston-Salem at the time of their deaths; Betty Brown (Mrs. Allen Greene) of West Point, Va.; and Mary Johnson (Mrs. Richard W.
