He was employed for 33 years with Simpsons Sears Ltd. John served with the RCN during the Second World War from September 1940 to September 1945. Baker Halifax Herald 6/18/2002 BAKER, John A. - 82, Hubbards, passed away suddenly June 15, 2002. Born in Blandford, he was a son of the late Joseph and Rebecca (Helsler) Baker. He was employed for 33 years with Simpsons Sears Ltd. John served with the RCN during the Second World War from September 1940 to September 1945. He joined as First Class Stocker and was discharged with the rank of Chief Petty Officier. His service abroad took him to such places as Gibraltar, South Africa and the landing of Normandy at the Battle of the Atlantic aboard the corvette HMCS Moosejaw. He had been an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 44, Chester, for over 40 years. He was a kind and gentle man and the heart and soul of the Hubbards Area Lions Club with 29 years perfect attendance and due later this month to receive a "900 Visitation" pin. His dedication to community service through the Lions Club led him to hold such offices as president six times, region chairman once and many other offices too numerous to mention. He was most proud though of being Leo Advisor of the Hubbards Leo Club for 17 years, constantly telling anyone who would listen that our young people can make a difference and they are our future. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by son, John, Vancouver; daughter, Connie George and her husband Joseph; sister-in-law, Pearl Baker, Mahone Bay; grandchildren, Patricia (Bruce), Angela, Theresa, Desiree, Cheryl; four great-grandchildren; several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis (Homans); brothers, Harris, Willard; sisters, Hazel, Memlow, Mae. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 20, in St. Luke's Anglican Church, Hubbards, Rev. Mark Pretty officiating. Burial will follow in St. George's Cemetery, East River. Family flowers only, donations may be made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Canine Vision Canada or a charity of your choice.
