Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 16, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m., an American Legion Service at 6:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary recited at 7 p.m. He was born on Jan. 3, 1928, in Preston, son of John A. and Mary Catherine (Ziemet) Steines Sr. He married Velma Thola on June 14, 1955, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in La Motte; she preceded him in death on Dec. 7, 2001. John farmed in the St. Donatus and Manchester areas and was later employed with the Iowa Department of Transportation until his retirement. He was a Navy veteran, and very proud to have served for his country. John was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Dyersville, the Knights of Columbus Council 1734, and the Dyersville American Legion Post 1734. John loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling, playing games and cards. He was very devoted to his faith. Surviving are six children, Barbara (Clarence) Karber, of Cottonwood, Ariz., Joyce (Rodger) Hughson, of Urbana, Ill., Mary Simpson, of Chandler, Ind., Kenneth Steines, of Independence, Thomas (Sheryl) Steines, of Deer Park, Ill., and Carla (John) Nienaber, of Garfield, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Odilo Steines, of Cuba City, Wis.; and a sister, Lydia Kinney, of Clinton. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Stephanie Steines; two sisters and a brother.
