Description	:	John Arthur Brown, longtime Wenatchee resident and historian, passed away on April 28, 2004 as he was approaching his 90th birthday. He was born in Burlington, Washington, August 28, 1914. His parents were Marcus and Bernice (Sawyer) Brown. His parents were Marcus and Bernice (Sawyer) Brown. Following his father's death in 1916 from an industrial accident and his mother's remarriage, John's family moved to the towns of Newhalem, Index, and Concrete. It was during this time of his life that he became interested in Native American history. In these small towns John's stepfather was employed on various construction projects. In 1926, following his family's return to Burlington, John graduated from Burlington Union High School in 1932. He then attended one year at Mt. Vernon Junior College. In 1935, he graduated from Seattle Pacific College with a major in Public School Education. John began his teaching career in a one-room school in the Big Bend (of the Columbia River) midway between Bridgeport and Grand Coulee. In 1939, he married his sweetheart, Mary Rae Hansen. The couple made their home in Manson where John taught for three years at the high school. John then went on to attend the University of Washington and later graduated with a Master of Arts degree in history. From 1942 to 1946 he taught at Wenatchee's H.B. Ellison Junior High, moving from there to Wenatchee Valley College where he held several administrative and academic posts. He retired in 1976. The John Brown Library at Wenatchee Valley College bears his name. John had a wonderful sense of humor and many interests which included hiking along the Columbia River, wood Carving, collecting old books, and other items for the museum and a love of music. In his younger years, he was a member of the Apollo Club and also sang in a quartet called, "Voices of the Valley." With his flair for writing and his love of Native American history, John began collaborating with Dr. Robert Ruby, a Moses Lake physician, in 1959. Together they published fourteen books, and numerous articles and reviews - primarily in the field of Native American history. They received many distinguished awards for their work. The most recent being the James B. Castle award "In recognition of significant contributions to a deeper understanding of the Columbia Basin history." Their latest book (2001) deals with Esther Ross, a 20th century Stillaguamish Chief. John was blessed to have been married to two wonderful women. After Mary's death in 1992, John married Kathryn Mylius. She was a loving and devoted wife. John was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Brown and their son, Lanny Jon Brown; his mother, Bernice Perkins; a sister Marguerite Brown Blair and a brother Wilbur R. Brown. He is survived by his widow, Kathryn Mylius Brown; a daughter, Janet (Jim) Hepler of Wenatchee and Kathryn's daughters, Patty (Steve) Bogen of Wenatchee; Kathy (Dick) Vetter of Chehalis; Janet Mylius of Cosmopolis and eight step-grandchildren. John was a longtime member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church. His influence will remain, but he will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. A memorial service will be held at Jones & Jones Funeral Home on Saturday, May 8, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. Donations in John's memory may be made to the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center where he served for many years as a board member.
