Description	:	John was born to Charles (1813-1904) and Mary Ann 'Wilke' (1822-1863) Hammer. He was the third of seven children. Before the age of ten the family moved to Mount Pleasant, Iowa. At the age of 12 his mother died. In 1864 his father remarried...to Mary Ann Hinkle. On October 24, 1875 he married May Adel Lowden in Point Pleasant, Iowa. Over the course of their marriage they had five sons. Harold Eugene (1876), Royal Frank (1878), Maxwell Algernon (1887), Fred Lorenzo (1880) and Ivan Ward (1888). On October 24, 1875 he married May Adel Lowden in Point Pleasant, Iowa. Over the course of their marriage they had five sons. Harold Eugene (1876), Royal Frank (1878), Maxwell Algernon (1887), Fred Lorenzo (1880) and Ivan Ward (1888). They family continued to live in Iowa until 1896 when they moved to South Dakota. John ends up buying land south west of Elkton, SD. in about 1897. The land and farm would stay in the family until 1976 when Adele Mary Hammer Bebensee and her husband Roy can no longer farm the land. Adele was the grand-daughter of John...daughter of Ivan. The three generations that lived there would all be farmers. The 1900 census lists John and May living on the farm with all five sons and John's father Charles. By 1910 Charles has died and only one son remains living on the farm with his wife and three children. By the 1920 census John has retired from the farm and they live in a small house on the southern edge of Elkton, SD. Their son Ivan has taken over the farm. Another son, Max (who is single), lives at the house in town but helps Ivan with the farm. In 1925 John and May celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Two years later May passes away. John moves in to his sister's home in Elkton. (Lydia Rosina Tilton). Six years later John passes away.
