Jones, 82, a Montgomery County insurance and bank director, died in Frederick Memorial Hospital today after a two-month illness. He lived in Poolesville, Md. A native of the county, Mr. Jones was born on the farm, Oak Ridge, which had been in the family since the mid-1700s. He was the son of the late John A. and Rose Maria Jones. He was reared on the farm. When his father died while he was at the old Maryland Agricultural College (now the University of Maryland), Mr. Jones left to help with the management of the family's property in Dickerson. Eventually he became associated with the Mutual Fire Insurance Co. of Montgomery County and opened his own branch agency. He was named director of the insurance company in 1923 and was active in its affairs up to the time of his death. In 1940, after the sale of the farm, Mr. Jones became director of the Farmers' Banking & Trust Co., of Rockville, and a member of the executive committee of the bank's Poolesville branch, positions he held at the time of his death. Besides his wife, Mamie, of the home address, Mr. Jones leaves four daughters; Mrs. Bettie J. Newman, Arlington; Mrs. Rosalie J. Freeman, Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Lucille J. Sheriff, Kent Village, Md.; and Mrs. Dorothy J. Elgin, Poolesville; and a son, John A. Jones, Jr. of Sellman, Md. He also leaves six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Hilton Funeral Home in Barnesville. Burial will be in Monocacy Cemetery. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Heart Fund.
