| Description | : | A native of Manchester, England, Heginbotham arrived in America with his parents in 1861. The family settled in Ohio, where John grew to manhood. He married Melissa Happy in 1887. A building contractor, he came to Holyoke when the Lincoln Land Company advertised town lots for sale. He built the original grade school building, and was instrumental in the formation of the first Methodist Church. He was a finanical backer in the first bank in Holyoke, the Farmers and Merchant Bank, in 1888. In subsequent years, other banks were formed, only to succumb to the power of Heginbotham's bank.
