He was what might be called a "gentleman of the old school" - polite, easily approached, yet bearing himself with great dignity, his manner forbidding unnecessary familiarity. He was for man years prominent as a business man, as the head of the large firm of J. Ballard & Sons. He was the president of the Athens branch of the State Bank of Ohio. He died at the place of his birth August 23, 1880. His mother was Elizabeth Whitney Ballard. From: "Temple's History of Framingham" BALLARD, John, 2d, son of William, born March 23, 1764, and wife Elizabeths Whitney, born February 14, 1763. John Ballard born in Charlement, Mass., Oct. 1,1790: carriage trimmer and harness-maker; learned his trade in Lancaster; came to Framingham, Massachusetts in 1811, built a house where Mrs. C. Bean now lives, 1816; removed to Ohio, Oct., 1838, settled in Athens; died Aug. 23, 1880. He married October 27, 1816, Pamelia Bennett, daughter of Joseph, died August 1839. Children include: Otis, born Oct. 6, 1817, married Apr. 20, 1841, Emily Kreida, cash. bank, Circleville, Ohio; William, born September 8, 1819, died that year: Charles, born November 7, 1820, died January, 1879; Addison, born October 18, 1822, married August 7, 1851, Julia Pratt [See ante p. 416]; James, born July 18, 1824, married Laura Walker, L. Athens, Ohio; Mary Swift, born June 8, 1827, married July 1, 1847, William J. Hoge, D.D., Prof. in Pres: Theo, Sem, in Va., coll. pastor with Dr. Spring, Brick Ch, N. Y.; William H., born January 8. 1833, died May 1, 1854; Elisabeth Whitney, b. Athens, Ohio, June 1, 1839, married December 28, 1860, Rev. Edward P. Walker, Prof. Rhetoric in Marietta Coll, Ohio.
