Description	:	John Banwell Gibbs was born Sept. 15, 1857, the son of George B. Gibbs. His father George had come to this country from England in 1840. John lived on the family farm south of Dyersville until his late teens when his father sold out, leaving John to start out on his own. He found himself in Storm Lake working as a baker until 1880 when he returned to Dyersville and married Miss Dorthea Schrader of Dubuque. She was born on Jan 29, 1857. His father George had come to this country from England in 1840. John lived on the family farm south of Dyersville until his late teens when his father sold out, leaving John to start out on his own. He found himself in Storm Lake working as a baker until 1880 when he returned to Dyersville and married Miss Dorthea Schrader of Dubuque. She was born on Jan 29, 1857. The couple farmed for two years then moved to Farley in 1883 opening a confectionary store and bakery. They were known for carrying a large stock of cigars in their business and for the chocolates and cream candies made by Dorthea. The Gibbs erected the brick building on the northeast corner of 1st Street and 2nd Avenue, which is now the Kramer building. John Gibbs was civically active in Farley being elected three times as town councilman. He chaired various committees.' In the winter of 1898, while working on the town waterworks, he contracted a cold which progressed into pulmonary trouble. The pumping rods detached causing the tank to become amass of ice. Mr. Gibbs insisted in removing the ice and getting the plant in working order again. From that time on, the health of J. B. Gibbs declined. He passed away in Dec. of 1899. The funeral was from the Presbyterian Church to Fairview cemetery. After his death, Dorthea continued the business until 1908 when she sold out to Fred Barton. Dora died July 1944, also being buried at Fairview. John and Dorthea had two sons… George: was associated with the State Bank of Farley. In 1906 he bought the first automobile in the town of Farley. George was a noted singer and entertainer. He and his wife Mable Garth had three children: John, Dorothy and Grace. George constructed the home now owned by Deb and Gene Connolly at 108 2nd Avenue S.W. George died in 1971. LeCount: also worked at the State Bank of Farley "Count" and his wife Ula had no children.
