John's will, written 18 June 1847, was presented in Chittenden Probate Court 18 March 1848 (Chittenden Co. Probate 30:149-50). In it, he left to his "beloved wife Candace" all his estate real and personal save for 40 acres of land in McHenry Co., Illinois. Son Reed Bascom was to receive the north half of John's farm in Milton, which was composed of two lots to be divided along a line in the center parallel to the north and south lines, plus half of the buildings thereon, after Candace's death; daughters Adeline Bascom, Emeline Bascom, and Jane Bascom were to receive the north half of the farm, together with half the buildings, to hold in equal share each with the other after Candace's death, as well as all of Candace's personal property she might still hold at death, on condition of payment within three years of $100 to Caroline Barney ("their sister"), and a promise that should they sell, Reed Bascom should receive first choice to purchase their land. To Hannah Bascom, wife of John's son Samuel (and to her children, after her decease), was left the 40 acres in McHenry Co., Illinois, described as the "S ½ of Lot No. 1 of the NW fractional ¼ of section No. 20 Township [46] N Range No. 6 East of the principal meridian conveyed to me by Samuel Hurlbut and Susan Hurlbut" 6 March 1846; Hannah was also to receive the other ½ of the note for $300 against Reed Bascom. Witnesses were Jesse Carpenter, Louis Tyler, and [Fletcher W. Lyman?]. Executors were Linus Bascom (John's son) and Albert G. Whittemore; the estate was represented as insolvent 8 April 1848 (Chittenden Co. Probate 30:151).
