Description	:	John Flessatti was born in Deggiano, Italy. In 1904, he and two cousins left thier homes to seek better lives in North America. They travelled to Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania where they found work in the coal mines. In 1904, he and two cousins left thier homes to seek better lives in North America. They travelled to Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania where they found work in the coal mines. As there were many hardships encountered in the working conditions, they decided to come to Canada, settling in the Crows Nest Pass area of Alberta in 1908, again working in the coal mines. In 1912, John sent money over to his home in Italy for his only brother, Michael, to come and join him in Canada, working in the mines. Paula Flessatti came to Crows Nest Pass from her homeland to be married in 1914 to John. Pia, Eda and Jena were born in Hillcrest, Alberta. Misfortune and unhappiness struck in 1916, when a terrible explosion occurred in the mine, taking Michael's life at the age of twenty-six years. After this tragedy, John fully realized the dangers of the mining life and the hazards of raising a small family under these conditions. Paula, being a farm-girl in Italy, encouraged John to venture into farming. John, however, had no knowledge of farming but had met during the mining days a good friend, Joe Corsiatto, who had a farm east of Bowden. In 1917, they made the decision to come into the farming district of Bowden, Alberta. John, and a cousin of Paula's, Mr. Ravelli, bought a quarter section of land. They built a house and barn but soon discovered this amount of land was not enough to support two families. Upons selling the land, Mr. Ravelli went homesteading in the Dawson Creek area and John moved back to Bowden. Here he found work by unloading coal from boxcars, the wage being five dollars per carload, and also hauling ice-blocks from the Bowden Lake into the Creamery in town. In 1920 John purchased another quarter section. As the land was solid bush, John went to work, with an axe, clearing a spot to build a shack for his wife and small family. Misfortune struck very suddenly with the passing of Paula in 1922. Realizing the great need of a mother's care and love in the home, John wrote to Italy asking help from a good family friend. In 1924, Lucgrezia Melchlouri came to Canada and married John. At this time John began once more to clear his land, with thehelp of his wife and family, they managed to break around ten acres per year. John enjoyed having his family near him, always remarking about the goodness of our country and Alberta being the best place to live. He was proud to be a Canadian.
