Description	:	Son of Stuart B. & Susan Withers Massie Whitehead John B. Whitehead, (b. 6/3/1894, d. 3/7/1959) was Nelson Farm Agent from the mid-1920s until the mid-1950s. In 1930 he married Linda Berry, a schoolteacher, of Criglersville, Madison County, Va. (b. 6/13/1890, d. 11/10/1968). Whitehead, (b. 6/3/1894, d. 3/7/1959) was Nelson Farm Agent from the mid-1920s until the mid-1950s. In 1930 he married Linda Berry, a schoolteacher, of Criglersville, Madison County, Va. (b. 6/13/1890, d. 11/10/1968). In her early life, she taught at old Fleetwood High school, near Jonesboro, later she was a librarian at Lovingston High School and then went on to become a librarian at the newly consolidated Nelson County High School. After the death of a sister-in-law in about 1936, Linda returned to Criglersville for several years to care for her infant nephew, John Daniel Berrey. Back in Nelson, she and John reared her nephew at their home, "White Plains," between Shipman and Lovingston. He attended Randolph-Macon Academy, Bedford, Va., and briefly Virginia Polytechnic Institute. His gravestone marker at Trinity Episcopal Church, tells so well of the heart of this great man. It reads: "I pray thee then, write me as one that loves his fellow men. He was known for his hearty "ho, ho, ho," laugh which could be heard for great distances. His strong commanding voice was one of his great gifts. He grew up on his father's farm in the early 1900s. He knew about forking hay, shocking wheat, and packing apples in a wooden barrel to be sent overseas. He knew about apple butter making, hog killing, wheat threshing, and stripping tobacco. He knew about plowing with a team of horses, hoeing corn, and pulling the big hayfork in the barn with the best horse on the farm. He also knew about modern farm equipment, the rotation of crops, and encouraged people to buy better quality livestock. Soil conservation was one of his loves. He encouraged farmers in the 100 Bushel Corn Club and in the pasture of improvement contests. He witnessed and was part of this great revolution in farming as a farm agent. Our county had so many mountains and woodlands and because there were a lot of young people maybe he felt 4-H was equally his calling. I really got to know him as a youngster during World War II. He was tall and had a commanding appearance in his khaki pants and khaki shirt. Somewhere he got a 4-H necktie. It was green with a 4-H emblem in white. He was ever so proud of it. He taught us so many of the right things to do. He stood very straight and tall at attention as he helped lead us in the pledging of allegiance to the United States Flag and in the 4-H pledge at the 4-H meetings. He was very proud of his being a native of Nelson County and he wanted us to be equally proud. He was both our teacher and cheerleader. He praised us when we won and found good in what we had done when we lost. His presence added integrity to our efforts when we approached businesses, merchants, and groups for help in our 4-H efforts. It was hard for anyone to say 'No' to him. We dared not disappoint him. Mr. John took us in his car to visit county fairs, judging contests, cattle sales, and many other activities related to 4-H and the farm. He wrote a column for the county weekly newspaper-full of newsy items that were going on in the county. He was public relations at its best. His title was Agricultural Agent, but his real love was the people with whom he worked and led. He was interested in the total person. He would go many miles to weddings of his friends and 4-Hers. Mr. John did not have any children of his own. His wife's nephew came to live with them for a few years. I really think he considered us all his children. Mr. John died of cancer many years ago. One day after he had had one round with cancer, we were admiring his 4-H necktie and he told me of a precious request. He wanted to be buried wearing his green and white 4-H necktie. That spoke from the heart of one great man who meant a lot to hundreds of us kids in Nelson County many years ago. I was one of those kids. Submitted to Nelson County Heritage by Paul Saunders.
