A man of splendid intellectual traits, gained principally by much travel and actual contact with the world and miscellaneous home reading, is John Benson, a popular farmer near Dillon, LeGrand township, Marshall county. He was born in Sweden on April 15, 1851, and is the son of Ben Olson and Gertrude (Nelson) Benson, who were born, lived and died in Sweden. They were each of good families and inﬂuential in their home community. John Benson was reared on the farm and early in his youth knew the meaning of hard work. He received a good education in the home schools. He desired a broader ﬁeld for his activities and consequently in the year 1873 set sail for the Western Hemisphere, landing in the harbor at New York city in May, coming on west soon afterwards, and locating in Marshall county, Iowa, where he has lived the major part of the time ever since; however, he has found time to travel in nearly every state in the Union, and, being a keen observer, he has laid up a fund of valuable information and is an interesting talker on diverse topics. Mr. Benson went to work by the month, later rented land and thereby got a start. Then he went to the Paciﬁc coast country and followed gold mining for seven years, then returned to Marshall county in 1882, and in 1894 he bought the farm where he now resides, which consists of one hundred and twenty acres. This he has placed under excellent improvements, carrying on general farming and stock raising. He exercises splendid judgment in the management of his place and has a good home and very comfortable income, making all the improvements and erecting the buildings on his place himself. Politically, he is a Republican, and he and his wife are members of the Lutheran church. On December 6, 1882, Mr. Benson was married to Walpa Rubenbauer, a native of LeGrand township, born here on November 13, 1859. She is the daughter of John Rubenbauer, whose sketch appears in full on another page of this work. To Mr. and Mrs. Benson two children have been born, Nellie, born March 21, 1884, is living at home, and Martin B., who was born July 14, 1888.
