John Bernard was born on February 6, 1940, in Hull, the son of John and Jeanette (Westra) Te Slaa. He was raised in Hull, where he attended the Hull Christian School and Western Christian High School. On January 3, 1961, he married Maxine Mae Dekkers in Hawarden. They made their home mostly in Hull, but spent summers at their lake home in Okoboji and winters in Arizona. He was a truck driver his entire life, eventually becoming the owner of Te Slaa Trucking in Hull. Maxine passed away on November 12, 2000, at their home in Hull, after more than 39 years of marriage. Mr. Te Slaa was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed boating, golfing, and snowmobiling. He especially liked riding his Harley motorcycle with his friends. He collected coins, guns, and toy trucks. Most importantly, he looked forward to spending time with his family. Survivors include his son and his wife, David and Vanessa Te Slaa, of Hull; his daughter and her husband, Karmin and Steven Kruger, of Sioux Center; seven grandchildren, Kyle Te Slaa, and his wife, Becca; Kody Te Slaa; Ross Te Slaa; Kelli Te Slaa; Blake Kruger, and his wife, Tasha; Kortney Kruger; and Shelby, and her husband, Bret Walinga; two great-grandchildren, Maxine Te Slaa and Jayde Kruger; two sisters, Joan Miller, of Hudsonville, Michigan; and Julene, and her husband, Peter Dekkers, of Sioux Center; a brother-in-law, Gerald Kroese, of Orange City; and Maxine’s three brothers, Anthony Dekkers, of Hawarden; Marvin Dekkers, and his wife, Jane, of Tempe, Arizona; and Warren Dekkers, and his wife, Ruth, of Orange City. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Hendrene Kroese.
