McQuillin died at his home on west Chestnut street Sunday afternoon, after an illness of three weeks. He is a son of one of the early pioneer families of this county that did much to bring about this splendid agricultural development of the present day. His grand father came to what is now Fulton county and located in Pike township in the thirties, and there he spent the remainder of his life. The history of Pike township is not complete without the name McQuillin. John B. McQuillin, son of John W. and Elizabeth McQuillin, was born in Pike township, March 30, 1863 and here he grew to manhood. His education was secured in the public schools of that township. In 1884 he was united in marriage to Clara B. Simpson and to bless this home four children were born. One of them has preceded the father into the great beyond leaving a son and two daughters to comfort and to cheer the mother on her lonely journey through life. Mr. and Mrs. McQuillin established their home in Pike township on a farm and here they resided until they moved to Wauseon in 1912 when Mr. McQuillin was elected sheriff of this county. He served two terms as sheriff whith credit to himself and to the satisfaction fo the people. When W. S. Boone resigned the office of sheriff, Mr. McQuillin was appointed to serve the unexpired term. It was during this time that the bandits made a night assault on the jail in a desperate effort to liberate one of their pals who was confined there charged with being one of the Delta bank robbers. It took courage to defeat these desperate men. John McQuillin was equal to the ???? ????? the hour. Mr. McQuillin was a likable citizen. Kind, courteous and considerate of others. He was faithful to any trust reposed in him. He was quiet and unassuming and did to the best of his ability the things that were his to do. Before coming to Wauseon, he served many years as a member of the board of education, justice of the peace and constable of Pike township. He was a member of Wauseon Lodge Knights of Pythias and was held in high esteem by that order. Mr. McQuillin took an active part in the Republican party in this county and served several years as the chairman of the county executive committee. He enjoyed a large circle of friends who regret that his life's work should be ended. But the call was made and peacefully and quietly he passed on having attained the age of 62 years, 7 months, and 21 days. The funeral services were held from the First Christian church, conducted by the order Knights of Pythias, Wednesday afternoon and interment made in the family lot in Salsberry cemetery, not far from his home in Pike township."
