Swaim, son of Brantley and Irena Fields Swaim, was born near Tangier, Ind., Feb. 24, 1852, died Aug. 10, 1925, age 73 years, 5 months and 16 days. He was the sixth of a family of eight children. Four brothers and one sister preceded him, Byron, Whitefield, William and Mrs. Isabell Heath and an infant brother. Two brothers survive, Milton of Tangier and Dr. P.H. Swaim of Ridgefarm, Ill. He was united in marriage with Sara Armstrong, Oct. 5, 1874. To this union were born seven children, three boys and four girls: Mrs. Grace Towell, Mrs. Otis Ratcliff, Daniel and Ralph near Tangier, one son Patrick who died at the age of 12 years and a daughter Katie at the age of 3. His entire life was spent within two miles of the place of his birth, and by his honest and upright life he gained the respect of all. He was elected to the office of assessor a number of times. He was serving as deputy assessor, when an attack of the flu caused his health to fail from which he never recovered. He was a kind and loving husband, always trying to make it as easy for his companion as possible; a kind father and grandfather, having the interest of his loved ones at heart; a kind neighbor and friend and will be missed from the community where he has spent his entire life. He never united with any church, but by faith was a Predestinarian Baptist, and when possible attended their services. A few hours before his departure he said he was ready to go, and called for death to relieve his suffering. He leaves to mourn their loss, his devoted wife, 5 children, 24 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, two brothers and a host of relatives and friends. Let us mourn not as those who have no hope, for he has heard the summons to come up higher. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Airhart of Crawfordsville, at the Friends church at Tangier, Wednesday at 2 o'clock, August 12. Music by Mrs. Frank Anderson and Miss Laura Marks, Walter Dennis and Abram Harvey.
